PAST HUNT ARCHIVE

2015 - The Golden Rule at Pedro

CLUE #01

Hunting about this haunted city, we often think she's lovely.
Two spirits however, have adamantly declared, "It's toxic and quite dirty."
Abandoned from the grounds, they plot to thwart those who oppose them.
A ghostly dream - when it comes true, will universally transform our reality.
Some tricks and treats are in store, for the place we've hidden our bounty.

This much we'll tell you, you’ll need to travel - so many places to visit!
Yet the one spot, that’s got what we’ve got, has more than one path to unravel.
We've studied long (almost two years exactly) and we boast this spot profoundly!

EXPLANATION: Carl Pedro Sr. (1920-2014) – His dream for his donated land to be made into a downtown park.
Urban Flower Field - A two year project - Illuminates the work of the City, and the scientific process of soil remediation through several varieties of Sun (Son) Flowers. A cross pollination between art, civic process, community, and science.
Amanda Lovelee - City Artist in Residence. Adam Kay - Biology Prof. UST
Explore MN/Tourist Info Center (travel/visit)
Lunds-Byerly's nearby (treats in store)
Red/Yellow Dots (spots)
Pedro Park’s several winding paths (unravel)

CLUE #02

When thinking of places, best use your noggin'
Options are winding down.
More often than not, this place’s sweet spot
Will make you wish you brought a toboggan.

EXPLANATION: A reference to Pedro’s (winding) paths, a mention of one of the many (spots) present, and gentle treeless slope creating a natural Ampitheatre

CLUE #3

If you're worried about spiraling out of control
When hunting the perfect score,
Use a language that's olden to find something golden.
Now how’d we score in the polls?

EXPLANATION: Referencing Pedro’s 8 spirals/paths, a Fibonacci sequence (spirals) The Golden Mean (perfect score, olden language/golden) Several poles line the park, "Vote for Pedro" from the movie, Napolean Dynamite and the two poles (polls, score in the poles) near where the treasure lay.

CLUE #4

No need to fret or go into a tizzy,
Extremes you must simply ignore.
When considering spots, on the map make some dots.
(So much red makes me dizzy!)

EXPLANATION: The park is not at the borders of St. Paul (ignore extremes), references to multiple (red) (dots) visible at Pedro. Spiral pattern mural (dizzy/tizzy) The first letter of each sentence spells out "NEW", Pedro Park is one of St. paul's newest parks

CLUE #5

Cashing in on visual clues is easier said than done,
Peeking about is child's play - wink, wink.
But if you gaze up high to see what's nearby
You'll get my point - I think.

EXPLANATION: Bremer Bank (cashing in), top of children’s playground (peeking/child’s play), and the towering nearby Pointe high-rise (up high/nearby/point) brings you to Pedro and visible from the hiding spot.

CLUE #6

When building public safety, listen to authority.
Seek to edit prison.
Standing alone, three words engraved in stone.
Make nearby open field a priority.

EXPLANATION: Old St. Paul Public Safety building (building public safety), which has FIRE HEALTH POLICE etched on it (three words engraved in stone), and is now part of the Penfield (o pen field) Apartments. Port Authority

CLUE #7

While plotting your trip, consider your guide
Consider your choices, and take a nice ride.
Bordering our treasure, yellow dots will appear,
Now look lower, and you'll know you are here.

EXPLANATION: (Nice Ride) bike station on Robert Street (border) of park, (yellow dots) painted on sidewalk at station, station map features words (guide/You Are Here)

CLUE #8

Cross more buildings off of your list—
Save this one that’s nearby.
A neighboring slope drops gently, we hope
You’ll fix the divisions above, then apply.

EXPLANATION: C(Ross mor)e Building on Robert Street side of park; slo(pe dro)ps names Pedro Park

CLUE #9

Hopefully when hunting you don’t hear a shout
And discover the offer’s been shun.
Allow (if you’re still alive) six to eight years to arrive—
Don’t delay, supplies are running out.

Entire verse is chorus from Smashmouth’s “Walking on the Sun”, referencing Pedro Park’s distinctive Sun and sunflower-shaped landscaping and David Ng (Son)
Lunds-Byerly's (supplies/traffic light at 10th and Robert)

CLUE #10

A new twist in St Paul are the beautiful streets
That feature full verses inscribed.
None ring this place, but if you make haste
One frigid poet you might meet.

EXPLANATION: Robert Frost is the (frigid poet), for Robert Street

CLUE #11

Thinking that stones might be your arch-nemesis,
Feeling that you’ve hit a wall?
Take some steps down, then look ‘round.
Be sure to peer in all crevices.

EXPLANATION: An overwhelming amount of painted rocks to hide the puck under, yet not under any of them (stones/arch-nemesis) but points to the mural wall. Between the wall and the steps is where the treasure hides

CLUE #12

So we’ve come to the end of another H(a)unt,
Soon the snow will fly.
We scared up a lark to visit Pedro Park
And invited you on this jaunt.

At 10th and Robert in downtown St. Paul
(A site with so much potential),
Proceed to there, on the north side of the square
To five stone steps (please be careful).

The treasure awaits just four steps down,
No special tools required.
Just look under clover and soon you’ll be over-
Joyed with what you’ve found!

A special nod to all those who had made it,
Your company can’t be beat!
From kickoff to searching, we didn’t leave you lurching
For good friends & fun were fated.

EXPLANATION: Pinpoints park and where treasure is placed

WHERE IT WAS FOUND: Pedro Park, by the west wall near the steps.
WHAT IT WAS FOUND IN: A Tupperware container with leaves glued to it.
WHO FOUND IT: me2 and Clue Master.
